About Me

pennytoadMy Professional Story

I am a metaphysical minister, usability evangelist and marketing strategist as well as an award-winning logo designer with over 35 years of experience in the communications industry working with Fortune 500 companies and major retailers.

My Real Story

It all started with a tiny little frog.

I was born in 1955 and grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In the early sixties it was really swampy out there, pretty much the Everglades. One day I was watering the lawn and I found a bunch of these tiny penny toads.

littlesherryI filled up a bucket to show my friends and they bought them. I loved having my own money for candy and sodas.

It was the first of many businesses that included food stands with hot dogs and repackaged Charles’ Chips, haunted houses and small back-yard theater productions.

I loved having my own money. I was in control of my  destiny.

By the age of eight I was already interested in going deeper. I didn’t have toys like other kids. I had a microscope, telescope, chemistry set,  Ouija Board and Magic Eight fortune telling ball. I also carried a sketch pad everywhere I went and drew incredibly detailed drawings.

I remember having a seance the day President Kennedy was shot. It was my birthday and my party was canceled so I held a seance in the back yard under the moon to try to raise his spirit. The initials JFK appeared in my hands and sent my friends off screaming so I kept my psychic skills quiet until recently.

My First Job

When I was 13 my parents bought a French restaurant that we lived above. The first day after we moved in I came downstairs with my chest all puffed up and told my dad I wanted to be the chef. He said, “Sure, here’s a mop.” I was confused. He explained that if you want to run a successful business, you start at the bottom. You can’t manage people if you haven’t stood in their shoes. I cleaned, cooked, waited, and managed the dining room by the time I was 18. I learned a lot about working with other people there, about being a boss and being on a team. and I learned how to flambé a pretty tasty Crêpe Suzette.

A New Career in Art

We closed the restaurant in 1973 and I went to the Fort Lauderdale Art Institute for a year but I had to support myself so I quit to get a job. I started in advertising working for a  real old timer with tons of awards on the walls. The interview consisted of him giving me some graphic puzzles to solve – like dividing a 10” space into 11 equal sections – without a calculator. I remember he used measurements like a match headfont or an eyelash and I studied hundreds of fonts.  He gave me regular tests to identify them.

Advertising to Publishing and Back Again

In my work life, I went back and forth between publishing and advertising and moved to NYC in 1985. I had a number of jobs but focused on building my own business which I opened in 1988 called goLogos. I was working for major retailers, cosmetic companies, publishers and Fortune 500 companies doing logo design. In 1993 I renamed the company Logos (meaning “the Word”) and expanded my services into branding, corporate identity and web design.

Falling in Love with Brooklyn

parktnI  moved to Brooklyn in 1999 and fell in love with the vintage signage on old delis, diners and barber shops and saw them being replaced by condos and 99 cent stores so I began to drive my motorcycle from one end of Brooklyn to the other shooting photos. I had hundreds of them and founded 718 Brooklyn whose mission is to “Capture and Preserve the Beauty of Brooklyn.”

My Body’s Intuitive Message

In December of 2005 I got very sick and didn’t seem to recover. I went to lots of doctors, healers, and shrinks but didn’t find help.

My illness was my body’s intuitive message that something was wrong with the way I lived. I was driven and a workaholic, never taking time for family and friends.

I finally got help when I began working with a psychic Reiki master and then a medical intuitive. They both encouraged me to begin my own psychic training and to develop a better understanding of the mind/body connection.  My financial adviser encouraged me to stop working and rest for a few months. Months became a year.

Taking Charge of My Health

While I was supposedly “resting” I became an ordained minister and expanded my metaphysical studies to energy medicine, mindfulness, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, stress reduction methods, neuroscience and psychology. I studied anything that might help me get better.

These studies helped me take charge of my health and understand how I got sick. I was a driven Type A personality with no balance in my life. My illness taught me how to take extreme self-care of myself and I began to teach that to others so I would not forget.

Forging a New Career

I have always been a natural marketer and as I get well, I have gone back to marketing but taking more holistic approach combing the spiritual principles, intuition, psychology and science that I’ve studied for years into my consulting business. I often add in stress management and energy medicine to help my clients function more effectively.

I found that as a business owner, I can only be successful with a balanced life of self care, spirituality and solid business practices.
